Blog Entry

The 2008 competition season got off to a stuttering start, with confusion over the entry closure date meaning we had to try and assemble our entries at short notice, to the effect that some of our gymnasts who would have entered were not entered as we couldn’t get hold of them in time.

That said we still went to Taunton with 12 gymnasts and a good mix of new and experienced “bouncers”.

The grade 5’s were up first and in a massive flight of 50 gymnasts we had 4 girls competing in the UNDER 11 age group – the girls were also entered as a team in an 8 strong competition.

SOPHIE SMITH finished in 5th place with a score of 46.0.
REBECCA GREEN finished in 10TH place with 45.6.
MARIE GILLIES finished in 38th place with 40.8.
SOPHIE CARTER finished in 48th place with 33.7.

In the team competition the girls took the BRONZE MEDAL – this is an excellent effort when you consider only SOPHIE SMITH had competed at this level before.
REBECCA, MARIE and SOPHIE CARTER were taking part in their first “proper” competition.WELL DONE GIRLS!

Next up were our Grade 4’s.

CHARLEIGH HOBBS showed great character in the UNDER 11 GIRLS age group finishing in 17th place in a flight of 25 gymnasts with a score of 43.8.Having gone up an age group and a grade in one go CHARLEIGH overcame a lot of nerves to complete her routines, especially her vol routine where she really “dug in” to complete the routine but did so with a better score than her set. She can now look forward to the rest of the season in the knowledge that she can hold her own at this new age and grade.

In the UNDER 13 GIRLS we had 4 girls competing in a flight of 19 with DAISY BARNETT reaching the days final, finishing just outside the medals in 4th place with a score of 70.3. DAISY’S placing in this competition pays tribute to the effort she has put into her training of late. Also reaching the days final was THEA HYDE who finished in 8th place with a score of 68.9. Also competing were KATIE CHILVERS finishing in 14th place and ROBYN TURNER finishing in 16th place with scores of 44.2 and 43.4 respectively.
The girls were entered in the team competition where they took the SILVER MEDAL. The season ahead is looking promising for all 4 girls as each showed they can hold their own in this age group and category.

In the OVER 17 GIRLS category JENNY MUMFORD produced her best ever performance to get through to the days final, taking the BRONZE MEDAL in a flight of 11 gymnasts. JENNY’S routines today showed why she was voted most improved senior at the Christmas party in December. JENNY’S score of 70.3 is by far her best ever effort and her score of 25.8 in the final showed that she is capable of moving up into the grade 3 category. Easily the highlight performance of the day.

Last up on the day were the GRADE 3’S.
ADAM WOOSTER competing in the UNDER 15 BOYS category reached the days final and took 6th place with a score of 70.3. The hard work at the end of last year on Full’s and Rudi’s allowed ADAM to include a Full in his vol routine for the first time and with more hard work ADAMS Vol’s will come with higher tariff’s as the season progresses.

LAURA KEMP moved up an age group to compete in the UNDER 17 GIRLS category and finished in 11th place with a score of 47.0 in a flight of 18.

All in all a good start to the season with JENNY’S continued improvement, ADAM coming to grips with high tariff routines and the “SQUIDS” showing great promise for the future.
Lastly a big thank you to all parents who came along to support our gymnasts and also to our officials for the day, DEB-judging, RICK-warm up marshall, CHERYL, CINDY, RICHARD and CHRIS coaches for the day.
