Blog Entry

The weekend of February 9th and 10th saw the first of the new national “Gala” weekends where the nations grade 1’s, 2’s, synchro , and DMT (double mini tramp ) gymnasts compete.
Aquila had 2 representatives at this first event, JACK TURNER and BETH STRANGE. Both Jack and Beth were moving up an age group this year to compete in the under 17 category.
Jack was looking to add to his success at last years grade 2 national finals, whilst Beth was competing for the first time in 18 months or so, having decided to skip last years grade 2’s after qualifying early in the season.

Jack was first to compete and performed what looked a good opening set routine only to be awarded marks of 4.5 – 4.7. After discussion with the chair it was a fuming head coach Richard who reported back that the marks had been deducted for a technicality to do with Jacks tariff sheet. Three compulsory moves should have been highlighted on the tariff sheet – unfortunately they weren’t, so this basically ended the days competition for Jack.
To his credit Jack repeated his set routine as his vol and scored 7.6’s and 7.7’s.
The upside of this (if there is one) is that if Jack repeats the marks he received for his vol in the coming competitions he will re-qualify for next years grade 2’s and also qualify for this years national finals.

Next up was Beth who as stated earlier was competing for the first time in 18 months. Once again it looked like a good start, however as soon as Beth got off we could see she wasn’t happy and when the scores showed 6.6’s and 6.8’s she revealed that she had deviated from the routine on the tariff sheet, once again basically ending Beths competition.
Once again, to her credit, Beth repeated her set as her vol and was scored with encouraging marks of 7.1’s and 7.2’s, an excellent effort after such a long lay off and the knock back of her set scores.

So not the best of starts to this years grade 2’s but some positives can be taken from the day, both Jack and Beth showed considerable resolve to continue in the event after being heavily deducted in their set routines and as they say “things can only get better” for the coming competitions.
